Example:
On October 7, 1492 Columbus' ship log recorded spotting shore birds flying west. One wonders if Columbus took this event to prayer. The birds may have reminded him of the dove that appeared when Jesus was baptized. Mark 1: 9-11 is the basis for the Luminous Mystery known as the Baptism of Jesus. Those 1492 birds may have been Eskimo curlews or American golden plovers, but the bird involved in the Baptism of Jesus is the Holy Spirit announcing something new and eternal.

In 1492, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and may have prayed the rosary during his voyage. On October 12, Columbus first sighted land and could have triggered a joyous celebration on the Santa Maria. Luke 4: 16-21 is the basis for the Luminous Mystery known as the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God. That first sight of land after traveling for two whole months could have meant the beginning of a new age, a new country, and the beginning of a new way of life. Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas that he called San Salvador; the natives called it Guanahani. This landing sparked the beginning of a new era and a new home. Much like the Proclamation of The Kingdom of God, this land is the proclamation for a new future, and a new way of living.

DeleteOK. Jesus' Kingdom would have given more respect to the natives. Yet, your point of a new era is valid.

When Columbus traveled to America, he began to trade with the citizens already living there. If Columbus had prayed during his journey, we could say he was following the Glorious Mystery known as The Coming of the Holy Spirit. By bringing items from his life to the citizens in America, he is helping them experience “new life”. The new life would be the life experienced in Spain now brought to America.
ReplyDeleteJose, There is a parallel between the Descent of the Holy Spirit and Columbus' arrival. The former was filled with goodness, the latter was a mixed bag.

October 7, 1492 was said to be the day Columbus came to America. Now we wonder if Columbus took the time and prayed during his journey. When he found the new land could have been a reminder of when Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the temple. Luke 2:46-47 tells us that Jesus was found in the temple preaching. The finding is a symbolism of finding something new in the world.

In 1492 Columbus came upon the land of the Americas. When he got there he was greeted by the Native Americans who greeted Columbus and his men generously, with much food and love. Even though it may have not been intended this way, Columbus being offered all this hospitable food might have reminded him of one of the Luminous Mysteries, that of the Institution of the Eucharist. These offerings of food could have made Columbus draw a connection to Christ offering his body and blood as food through bread and wine (Jn 13:1). Columbus accepted this food as it was a sign of respect and maybe an offering to their God.
ReplyDeleteSofian! Good! You make me think that Judas and Columbus would both fall to betrayal

On August 3, 1492 Columbus discovered America. One wonders if he thanked God for leading him there. Finding America may have reminded him of the time Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the Temple. Luke 2:46-47 is the basis for the Joyful Mystery known as The Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

On August 3rd, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on a nearly three month journey. He expected to reach Asia, but instead "discovered" an already populated continent. The start of Columbus' journey is very similar to the "Ascension of Christ" , one of the 20 mysteries of the Rosary. Like Jesus, Columbus is saying farewell to his home and is going away in search of a new world. While Jesus' journey was noble and divine compared to Columbus' journey which ended in the deaths of hundred of people, the similarities between both Jesus Christ and Columbus are still present.
ReplyDeleteSean,
ReplyDeleteNice. The idea of leaving one world for another is intriguing. You do well to point out the goodness and evil involved with Jesus and Columbus.

ReplyDeleteOn August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World. Christopher Columbus did not know what awaited him, if there was even land to chase, or if he would come back alive. One wonders if God was watching Christopher Columbus the whole time. Mark 9: 2-9 is a luminous mystery, depicting a circumstance where John, James, and Peter were in the mountains. When challenged revealed itself to them, Jesus did as well, and one could infer he helped them. Mark 9: 2-9 depicts how God is always watching and making sure that if and when a challenge presents itself, he will always fix it. When presented with adversity, God will surely be there to help one get back up. One wonders if God supervised the exploration of America and if God was the reason Columbus “discovered” America and lived to tell the tale

DeleteThe mystery is the Transfiguration. Jesus dramatically changed his appearance and helped Peter, John, and James understand the Messianic Secret. After this sudden moment of revelation, Peter, John, and James left the mountain feeling confused. Similarly, Christopher Columbus must have felt many moments of confusion, but also greatness on his many adventures. Columbus stumbled upon something great when he saw gold and the native Americans in the Americas. but he went on many other voyages, confused, and trying to find the fastest route to China, while Peter, James, and John were trying to find the fastest route to God.
In 1492, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and may have prayed the rosary during his voyage. His journey can be compared to the Glorious Mystery, the Descent of the Holy Spirit. Christopher Columbus' arrival to the "New World" brought knowledge and ENLIGHTENED the people of this New World, just like the Holy Spirit enlightened those he fell upon.
ReplyDeleteAlexander, D/E to create a strong paragraph. Your comparison works. Columbus' descent may also have been motivated by a yetzer ha'ra!

Christopher Columbus and the Blessed Mother, Mary, fall into the same month of October.Christopher Columbus sailed to meet King Ferdinand II and he never forgot him. The second joyful Mystery in Luke 1:39-56 is The Visitation, where Mary visits Elizabeth and tells her she also does the same as Columbus (never forgets her).

As Christopher Columbus set sail for his voyages, most of what lay ahead of him is unknown at sea. If Christopher Columbus prayed during his voyages, his prayers could have been answered when the new land was revealed to him. Luke 2:22-40 which is also known as the 4th Joyful Mystery, The Presentation of the Lord may describe Christopher Columbus' third voyage. The way Jesus was presented in the Temple compares with when Columbus discovers the new land and returns to tell what he has found.
ReplyDeleteDamon,
DeleteOk. Mary, Joseph and Columbus all have their type of presentation with happy and sad implications in the Temple and in the royal courts of Spain

ReplyDeleteWhen Christopher Columbus was on his voyage to India, he most likely prayed to the rosary and wished for a blessing as he became lost at sea. When he arrived on the shores of the Caribbean, he most likely did not know where he was, but thought God had still given him a blessing. The Luminous Mysteries can relate to Christopher’s thoughts as they state” My Kingdom is not of this world”, because Columbus knew he was not in a place in which Spain ruled. This caused Columbus to want to spread the knowledge of Christianity, and proclaim the new found land for Spain.
OK
ReplyDeleteYou are speaking of the Proclamation of the Kingdom!

As Christopher Columbus was on his voyage on the Atlantic Ocean we are pretty sure that he prayed to the rosary and wished for blessings upon his people for a safe trip and success. The Joyful Mysteries related to because he found a "new world" and the similar mystery was the Finding in the Temple Luke Chapter 2:46-47

In 1892 , Christopher Columbus set sail on an adventure to explore the New World . On his Voyage to the New World it is possible that Columbus prayed the Rosary . This supported by the fact that the month of his voyage was October. October is the month of the holy rosary of the blessed Virgin Mary . The start of his journey may have been like the Ascension of Christ . This Glorious mystery is relatable
ReplyDeleteto his journey because much like Jesus Columbus was leaving his home . Another mystery of the Rosary that relates to is the Carrying of the Cross . This Sorrowful mystery is relatable to Columbus's voyage because during the actual voyage there was no guarantee of them finding land and had to be patient. These two Mysteries of the Rosary both show that Columbus's voyage is relatable .
typos... 1492.... This supported? relatable??
