IGNATIUS AND WEED!

Ignatius would have you really think and pray about marijuana use.
Write one paragraph on "Ignatius and Weed"

“It was easy for me to say no,” says a young teenage girl in the ADAP video. She spoke of her moral standards. Compare this quote from the Video with this excerpt from My Life with the Saints.

“Ignatius’ spirituality is grounded in the real – life experience of people living their daily lives. The path of St. Ignatius means searching for signs of God’s presence in the stuff of the everyday. And it means committing yourself to regular prayer in order to contemplate these signs. For without the discipline of prayer we tend to overlook and forget these moments of God’s presence.
Make a reference to  the following
He was definitely a rake.( page 75)
Some thoughts and experiences left him sad and others happy. Little by little he  came to recognize the difference between the spirits that agitated him, one from the enemy, the other from  God.  ( P83)
The Spiritual Exercises say "Human beings are created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save our souls." As such, we should make use of the things on earth that enable us to do so, and free ourselves of anything that prevents us from doing so. We should be, to use a favorite Ignatian expression, "indifferent to all things."

  1. Ignatius of Loyola would be against the use and legalization of weed and marijuana. One reason for his possible disdain of these drugs is that he would believe that weed and marijuana would distract a student from prayer. While an adult or teenager is smoking drugs, they are not focusing on committing themselves to God and instead are indulging themselves with recreational drugs. Ignatius believes that one should free themselves from anything that might prevent us from fulfilling their purpose. Also, Ignatius would be against the use of drugs because using recreational products without restraint would be irresponsible and undisciplined, which Ignatius stressed a lot when talking about the importance of prayer and how it benefits God and humans alike

  2. The quote from the video can compare to the excerpt from “My Life with the Saints” because the excerpt discusses how everyone can search for signs of God in everything. The example in the video is weed and how the girl could say no to it easily due to her morality. Ignatius of Loyola is a rake, meaning he is able to group ideas together, an example being the Spiritual Exercises. The Spiritual Exercises indirectly tell us to avoid weed because weed prevents us from being able to praise and serve God. “Some thoughts and experiences left (Ignatius) sad and others happy.” This quote connect to the one from the video because someone being pressured to try something they don’t want to can be sad and vice versa.

  3. The quote from the video is similar to the except from My Life with the Saints in that they both describe the impact of volition and emphasize the importance of indifference. Ignatius and the teenage girl both demonstrate how indulging in more honorable and holy acts can make one predisposed to better opinions and beliefs. These qualities make one less likely to submit to temptation and intoxicate oneself with illegal substances. Ignatius especially highlights the impact of choice through his past. As he previously lived a promiscuous life but eventually becomes a saint, Ignatius’ history reveals how choosing to expose oneself to God can ultimately benefit one by making one less likely to succumb to temptation. Ignatius and the teenage girl emphasize the importance of indifference by describing the ease of refusing to commit immoral acts. Ignatius develops the theological idea of “indifference to all things” by establishing how when he committed himself to God, all other acts felt less important. Thusly, Ignatius would suggest teenagers not smoke marijuana because a dependence on the drug may interfere with one’s relationship with God. Furthermore, the concept of intoxicating oneself would likely not entertain Ignatius as no experience is more invigorating and fulfilling as the Christian one. The teenage girl also highlights the importance of indifference as she reveals it being so easy to refuse to smoke marijuana. Ignatius and the teenage girl thus convey that one should not smoke marijuana because once one has developed a relationship with God and establish formidable morality, egregious acts such as smoking marijuana are unfulfilling and unrewarding.

  4. Ignatius of Loyola would have express himself freely on the use of marijuana in modern communities. Ignatius' metanoia made him realize his path to become one with God, therefore, marijuana usage may have become something for Ignatius to pray for everyday. Before experiencing a metanoia, Ignatius was a rake until he came to a realization that spirits come from others as well as God. Ignatius' take on marijuana could have had to do with being "indifferent to all things."

  5. Saint Ignatius would have one really think and pray about marijuana use. I believe Ignatius would be against the use of marijuana, as he was a Earth bounded person. This means he would not approve of the use of a substance to “heal oneself” and get closer to God. The only way for one to get closer to God is by daily prayer. Ignatius was also a rake, and was not very happy and give it all up. So if money would not help one get closer to God, then the use of weed would have never helped. Saint Ignatius for a time did not understand spirits until he began recognize the difference between the good and bad ones. Had Ignatius used weed to understand the spirits he would have failed because weed would have done nothing for him except get him high, as he needed to learn about the spirits little by little. Overall, I would say Ignatius does not approve weed and would never tell someone use it in order to get closer to God. The only true way to get closer to God is by prayer.

  6. Weed has never been or never will be safe. We are encouraged to never even think about using weed. That teenager might have found it extremely easy to say no but others might find it extremely difficult. It is not as easy to say no as many people think it is because of all the people the pressure us to try it. Ignatius said that we should praise God by taking care of ourselves.

  7. Ignatius would most likely be in support of marijuana use because, in his time, he would think marijuana brings humans closer to God because of it's effects. Even though Ignatius was gave up his fortune because he was initially a rake and wanted to be closer to God, he must have had gone through tough times. Marijuana and prayer together could have helped calm him if he was ever felt anxious about anything. Marijuana would also help Ignatius be virtuous and love everyone because of it's effects which was a positive in his time. Smoking also agrees with the quote from his spiritual exercises because it frees us from responsibility and helps us to get closer to God.

Based on this mini article of ignatius and weed the main idea that ignatius was trying to prove is that whatever it takes for someone to serve our lord, reverence, praise we shall do it whether if we smoke weed or do any type of drugs because it come from our earth.

  9. Saint Ignatius of Loyola is searching for God in present day things. For example kids who go through things think God can be found in drugs or liquor.Kids who smoke weed get high probably think they can see God when they are high.Saint Ignatius said he wants to see God in present day things so kids will think when they are high they can find God.

  10. Ignatius is an outgoing person, he does not just follow the rules, everyone might turn right and he will go left. This is why i would say he would not really have a problem with weed, as long as you pray, and stick with god. If weed does not affect the person who you are, or making you do bad things, or take you away from your priority its ok. However, if it does it is not ok. Also, if weed is the only thing you are worried about it would be a problem. Therefore, if one does what he/she has to do and does not let weed interfere with that and God and prayer its fine, but if it does it is a problem.

  11. I think that Ignatius would be okay with some aspects of marijuana, and not with others. Ignatius would be okay with the fact that weed takes you away from the world and opens your mind, he will not be okay with the fact that weed is a drug, does damage to your body, and is an addictive, mind crippling substance. Ignatius would love for people to get closer to god, but people in modern day, use weed in the wrong way, and get themselves incarcerated, crippled, or worse. Instead, Ignatius would call for humans to pray to god, and force a connection.

In the video that we saw about drugs we talked about saying no and to be willingly strong enough to say no to drugs. Saint Ignatius teaches us to search for signs of God’s presence in the stuff of the everyday. And it means committing yourself to regular prayer in order to contemplate these signs. We can learn from st Ignatius and from the drug prevention video.
